"Heartless Felon" By Jimmie Smith

Carlos is a 17-year-old with 5 children. He has one boy and 4 girls, including one set of identical twins.  Carlos was a member of the Heartless Felons, a Cleveland-based gang in prisons across Ohio known for brutal violence.  He admitted to robbing a lot of people at gunpoint. One day, he decided that he wanted to get out of the gang life. The Heartless Felons told him he had to do one more crime and then hand in his gun after the robbery. What Carlos didn’t know was that the penalty for getting out of the gang would be the murder of his girlfriend, the mother of his five children, with his gun. His girlfriend was shot and killed by another member of the Heartless Felons with Carlos’s gun. Carlos’s fingerprints and another man’s fingerprints were on the gun. Carlos maintains his innocence. He only learned of his girlfriend’s death when he was arrested for her murder.

I was asked to speak to Carlos because of his confusion concerning Islam and Christianity. After sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with him, he said that he does believe in Jesus Christ and has accepted him.  However, he also believes that Muhammad is the Savior. I continue to share with him the Word of God concerning the Deity of Christ. Please pray that the Holy Spirit would reveal Jesus to Carlos as the only Way, Truth, and Life.

Please pray for wisdom and grace as True Freedom’s chaplains minister to high-risk clients like Carlos. May God soften the hearts and open the eyes of inmates across Ohio. Thank you for your partnership with us.
