Our Mission

True Freedom Ministries is an independent, evangelical, non-profit organization dedicated to reaching those locked behind steel doors in jails and prison all across Ohio, those trapped in homelessness on the streets of Cleveland, those abandoned in nursing homes all across Northeast Ohio, and those shackled in addictions with the message of the true freedom that is found only in Jesus Christ.

Michael Swiger
Michael Swiger

Executive Director

Michael Swiger serves as our Executive Director. While a student at Case Western Reserve University, Michael was convicted as an accomplice to a crime his older brother committed and ended up serving 17 years for involuntary manslaughter. While incarcerated Michael earned two Associates Degrees with a 4.0 GPA, went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, before receiving a full scholarship to study theology at the Reformed Theological Seminary. Frank Scalish
Frank Scalish

Operations Manager

Frank Scalish is our Operations Manager. For over 37 years he has worked for labor unions and held various management and sales positions in the insurance industry. Frank re-dedicated his life to Christ in 1992 when he was delivered from the life dominating addiction of substance abuse. He is committed to seeing lives changed by the power of the Gospel. As a Biblical mentor he helps Christians discover areas in which they may be disobedient to the commands and principles of Scripture and helps them learn how to lovingly submit to God’s will.

John Black
John Black

Chief Financial Officer

John Black is our Chief Financial Officer. John comes to the ministry with 30 years of business experience. He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a degree in Business Accounting and he holds a CPA license. He also graduated from Cleveland State University with an Masters Degree in Business Administration. Beside serving as the Operations Manager, John is also a Councilman for Brooklyn Heights Village and an Adjunct Professor at Indiana Wesleyan University's Rockside Road campus.

David Wessel
David Wessel

Development Director

David Wessel serves as our new Development Director. David has 10 years of administrative experience. He is the former principal of Chagrin Falls Middle School. He studied theology through Toronto Baptist Seminary and is one of the founding elders of Sovereign Grace Community Church in Richfield, Ohio. David graduated from the College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA) with a BA in government. He later received his Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Ursuline College. David is looking forward to helping find partners and resources to grow True Freedom throughout the state of Ohio.

Director of Ministries

Gary Koly is our Director of Ministries. Gary is a graduate of Liberty University. For the past twenty-nine years, Gary has worked in full-time prison ministry. He received the Gold Star Award from the Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a volunteer.

Rae Borders
Rae Borders

Director of Women's Ministry

Rae Borders serves as Director of Women's Ministry. With thirty-two years in the health industry field, managing mainframe computers, including Disaster Recovery, trouble shooting, file maintenance and software updates and integration, Rae holds an Associate in Christian Studies degree with a ministerial license from the Sure Foundation Theological Institute; graduating in September 2008. Rae holds a ministerial license from MCBC under the direction of Pastor James Edwards.

Mark Stradiot
Mark Stradiot

Pastor

Mark Stradiot is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute with 30 years of ministry experience. Mark preaches each Wednesday morning at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. He is also part of the study group that meets weekly at Grafton Correctional. Mark travels each Thursday to the Juvenile Detention Home to ministry. Also on Thursday evenings, Mark leads the evening Reformers Unanimous program at the True Freedom Ministries home office in Cleveland.

Rev. Dr. Jimmie D. Smith, Ph.D

Juvenile Chaplain

Rev. Dr. Jimmie D. Smith, Ph.D, is a Pastor, Teacher, and Chaplain. He serves the Lake Galilee Baptist Church as Pastor/Teacher. He also serves as Juvenile Chaplain in Cuyahoga County. He also retired from the Cleveland Public Library, after 33 years of service. He was a Library Assistant for the Library. Studied at Baptist Bible Institute, Moody Bible Institute, Luther Rice Seminary, and Newburgh Theological Seminary. Married, with three children, and two grand children.

Executive Assistant

Joyce Currey serves as Executive Assistant. Joyce has over thirty years experience in full-time administrative prison ministry. Joyce received her chaplaincy training and clinical pastoral education at Sisters of Charity Health Systems.
