True Freedom Enterprises Off to Fast Start

God is truly blessing True Freedom Enterprises. On March 1st, we officially launched this new initiative at the Northeast Reintegration Center, a female prison located on East 30th in Cleveland. This program is doing more that taking women from the prison and placing them in job-training programs in companies across Cleveland, it is restoring honor and dignity to broken lives and setting them on the path to successful re-entry.

Seven young ladies are working daily at the cafe at the Virgil Brown building, and by God’s grace, three of our clients are now working at the Marble Room owned by Frank and Malisse Sinito. These women are doing more than a job, they are preparing for careers. Below is a conversation between Mike Swiger and the ladies that are working at the Marble Room, just moments before their first day on the job:

“Mr. Swiger, you’re going to stay with us the whole time, aren’t you?” Tiffany asked.
“No,” he answered. “You don’t need me. You earned your way here. We trust you.”
Tears welled up in her eyes. “We’re gonna make you proud.”
“You already have,” I said.

Thank you, True Freedom Partners, for all that you have done to make this day a reality. And praise God for His great grace. Our prayer is that the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will allow us to expand this initiative to other prisons in a timely manner. May God transform many lives for the glory of His Name.

Volunteers Needed at True Freedom

Would you prayerfully consider using your God-given abilities to advance His Kingdom for the glory of His Name?

Every Thursday from 6:30-8:00pm, Reformers Unanimous meets at 6114 Francis Ave. Here facilitators and fellow clients study truth from God’s Word and build accountability relationships to strengthen each other in Christ.

TF’s mentoring program takes place the second Wednesday of every month from 6-8 pm at Grafton Reintegration Center. We also do mentoring on the third Wednesday of every month from 6-8 pm at Grafton Correctional Institute. At Northeast Women’s Reintegration Center on East 30th, TF offers opportunities to disciple women in the Gospel.

If you are interested in volunteering in any of the ways listed above, please email David Wessel at or call him at (216) 202-3636, ext. 709.

Swiger receives Volunteer of the Year Award

True Freedom’s Executive Director, Mike Swiger received the Volunteer of the Year Award at Grafton Correctional Institution and Grafton Reintegration Center. This is quite an honor as there are hundreds of volunteers that work in these two institutions. Mike works countless hours to prepare inmates for reentry through evangelism, discipleship, mentorship, and pre-release education. “This award really belongs to the staff and volunteers who I have the privilege to represent,” Swiger said. “I am humbled by this honor.”

Mike is True Freedom’s visionary, tirelessly leading us to become the thriving organization we are today, by God’s grace. We praise the Lord for Mike Swiger who serves from a heart of true love for the Lord Jesus Christ and for every one of our clients. What a gift from the Lord he is!

Amazing Grace at the Juvenile Justice Center

A 17-year-old young man, who had not been in school for three years, recently testified that jail has been good for him. He did not know his father, and his mother was a drug addict. He lived on the streets, robbed houses, and slept anywhere he could find for the night.

In jail he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Now, he is back in school earning credits toward a GED, and he dreams of becoming a Certified Auto Mechanic. Now, he is a student of the Holy Bible, and he hopes to explain the Gospel of Jesus Christ to his mother!

He said, “Jail has been good for me.”

Chaplain Jimmie Smith

True Freedom Enterprises Launched

Over the last two and a half years, Mike Swiger and the entire True Freedom Ministries team have worked tirelessly to launch True Freedom Enterprises, a non-profit organization dedicated solely to prisoner workforce empowerment and transitional housing. This is a separate and independent tax-exempt organization from True Freedom Ministries. One facet of this new outreach consists of a pre-release, pre-employment training program where inmates during their last year of incarceration will leave the institution under True Freedom’s watchful eye and apprenticed in private-sector jobs.

On March 1st, we officially launched this new initiative at the Northeast Reintegration Center, a female prison located on East 30th in Cleveland. We did more than transport seven women from the prison to the cafe at the Virgil Brown building, we restored honor and dignity to lives that have broken. After six months working at this location, they will graduate to the Marble Room, where they will continue their culinary training for an additional 90 days at one of the nation’s premier restaurants. We are so thankful for the generosity of Frank and Malisse Sinito and for their willingness to give our clients a second chance.

This program will give these returning citizens a legitimate opportunity to locate gainful employment by providing:

• Gain real-world work experience prior to release
• Gain transferable skills and certifications to increase their human capital
• Receive job evaluations and job referrals from employers that can be used to secure post- release employment
• Gain access to re-entry resources to reduce financial barriers to reintegration

According to a May 2016 Harvard White Paper, using data collected by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) as part of the National Corrections Reporting Program (NCRP), ten thousand state and federal prisoners are released nationally every week. Sixty-seven percent are re-arrested within three years, and seventy–five percent are still unemployed after one year. In Cleveland alone, three thousand inmates are released every year, and twenty-five hundred are unemployed after one year. Of that 2,500 unemployed, 90% return to prison. This initiative is designed to dramatically reduce these numbers, which in turn will create safer communities all across Ohio.

We praise the Lord for His kindness in giving us the privilege to start this one-of-a-kind program in Ohio.

Changed Lives at the Juvenile Justice Center

On December 5th, at the Juvenile Justice Center, 16 young men were baptized. We had the privilege of baptizing 23 inmates earlier this year. These at-risk young people, including former gang members, want to leave the way of darkness and hopelessness behind and walk in obedience to our loving Savior. Does this not thrill your soul?
God is truly blessing True Freedom Ministries at the Juvenile Justice Center.

Please continue to pray for our chaplains, that they would faithfully proclaim the Gospel and that lives would be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord is using your prayers, labor, and financial support to bring forth priceless fruit.

Sign Up to Feed the Homeless

Thank you to all who have volunteered with TF’s homeless ministry. Your willingness to serve is a great encouragement to many needy souls.

For all interested, our homeless ministry meets on Saturday evenings at 7:20pm, starting at 2227 Payne Avenue, then moving on to 2100 Lakeside, and finally ending up at 1550 Superior Avenue.

In the past we have noticed that some weeks we have an overabundance of volunteers, and other weeks a shortage. To achieve better balance, we are implementing an online sign-up system for churches and other organizations.

If your group is interested in serving the homeless on a given Saturday night, please check the sign-up list for available weeks at, then sign-up using SignUp Genius.

We praise the Lord for your partnership with us. May His Name be proclaimed, in word and in deed, on our city streets. And may He draw the broken to Himself.
